River Family Health Center offers a variety of primary care services, on premise, for the entire family. Our Ambulatory Surgical Unit offers surgeries on an outpatient basis for a number of specialties.
Company History
River Hospital's Story Begins......
1940 -The first hospital in Alexandria Bay was founded by Dr. Walter G. Robinson and was named the "Alexandria Bay Memorial Hospital" located on Market Street.
1946 - The property of the former Thousand Islands House was purchased by the E.J. Noble Foundation from Abe Cooper
1947 - Edward John Noble pledged $125,000, one half the cost of building the hospital, if the people of Alexandria Bay could raise the other half. E.J. Noble, the owner of the Life Saver Candy company, was well known for his philanthropy and special interest in healthcare in the north country.
1949 - Ground was broken for the first phase of the hospital. The new two-story Noble Foundation Hospital had a capacity of more than 25 beds.
1950 - July 14, The E.J. Noble Hospital, a 30-bed facility, including radiology, emergency, surgical, and maternity services was dedicated.
1970 - The second story was added to the facility and the bed capacity Increased to 51 beds, and provided services to more than 20,000 permanent and more than 80,000 summer residents and visitors.
River Hospital is Born!
1991 - As a result of radical changes to healthcare in the 1980's, EJ Noble Hospital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and entered a relationship Samaritan Medical Center.
2000 - Threatened with closure, a group of concerned citizens formed a task force to appeal to the New York State Department of Health to become an independent institution.
April 15, 2003 - The hospital was reborn as an independent facility and named "River Hospital". This day is celebrated each year, as a birthday party for River Hospital.
2006 - River Hospital opened the River Community Clinic, now River Family Health Center. The move to the modular building allowed treatment of more patients and room for new physicians to join the Hospital.
2013- River Hospital celebrated the grand opening of the River Community Wellness Program, and the 10th anniversary of the Hospital.
2016-2017 - A capital campaign was started to raise over $4 million from community members and awarded a $9.5million grant from the NYS Department of Health, signaling a new chapter in the Hospital's history and the start of planning for a complete renovation of the facility.
River Hospital Today
2020 - The construction in the Hospital to renovate and modernize the facility was completed. A two-story Medical Office Building was built, which now houses River Family Health Center, Convenient Care, Physical Therapy, and Behavioral Health Services.
2023 - River Hospital receives the largest grant in it's history of $10 Million dollars to revitalize the bottom floor of the Hospital and the Inpatient Unit.
2025 - A groundbreaking ceremony was held that began the renovations to the Inpatient and Basement Level of the Hospital. Completion is expected by early 2027.
